Abstract
776,053. Self-propelled missiles; ammunition fuzes. BLACKER, L. V. S. Aug. 26, 1953 [Aug. 26, 1952], No. 21460/52. Classes 9 (1) and 9 (2). A missile provided with a rocket charge and a launching charge is so arranged that the rocket charge can be first ignited under external control, and the launching charge is ignited either by the same ignition means or in consequence of the ignition of the rocket charge. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1 the rocket charge 10 may be ignited by an electrical fuze 28 which is connected to the head of the missile and also to a conductor ring 30 insulated from the missile and adapted to contact a plunger 32 insulated from the barrel 26 of the gun. The flash from the fuze 28 also passes radially through channels 34 and ignites a small cartridge 36'which drives a firing pin 40 to ignite a second cartridge 42; cartridge 42 ignites a pyrotechnic delay 46, the flash from which passes along a bore 48 and ignites the launching charge 24. The radial passages 34 may be sealed by valves in the form of small balls 35 which are initially coated with black powder. In another embodiment, Fig. 3, a percussion cap 54 is ignited by a firing pin in the breech of the gun and drives a rod 60 along a bore to strike a firing pin 61 which ignites a cap 64; flash from the cap 64 passes radially through passages 67 and ignites the rocket charge 68. Flash from the charge 68 returns through holes 69 to initiate a cartridge housed in a case 62-which is driven rearwards to ignite the cartridge 76, the flash of which passes along channels 77 to ignite the launching charge 78. Fig. 5 shows part of a rocket designed for launching from a spigot mortar and provided with a tail tube 82 which fits over the spigot of the mortar. When the spigot contacts the stud 92 an electrical circuit to the fuzes 86 is completed through the spigot, the spring 104, cylinder 96, and metal bushes 112 inserted in some of the radial holes 110. The fuzes 86 ignite the rocket charge (not shown) and the flash from them also passes through the unobstructed holes 110 and passage 122 to the priming charge 94 which then initiates the launching charge 101 through holes 123. Specifications 772,651, 773,190 and 774,786 are referred to.
