Abstract

775,668. Spray burners. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Feb. 16, 1955 [Feb. 25, 1954], No. 5608/54. Class 75(1) In a liquid fuel burner comprising an elongated body 2 having a passage 9 for the fuel opening into a circular swirl chamber 13 at one end of the body and an orifice 8 in the end plate 7 of the body opening out of and coaxial with the swirl chamber, and an elongated casing 3 around the body and defining therewith an annular passage 14 for a stream of atomizing air, steam or other gas, the fuel passage 9 and the swirl chamber are .arranged so that the fuel flows through the chamber towards the orific 8 with a radially inward component of motion and with swirl about the axis of the chamber, and the edge of the orifice is rounded and blends into the outer face of the plate 7 so that the fuel adheres to and flows outwardly over the outer face of the plate to meet the air stream at the edge of the plate preferably at right, angles. The edge of the orifice is semi-circular and blends into the inner face as well as the outer face of the plate 7. The fuel passage 9 is preferably anular and is formed by an axial rod 1 mounted inside the elongated body 2, the end of the rod being spaced from the plate 7 to form the swirl chamber and being provided with spiral vanes 12. The diameter of the end of the rod 1 is greater than the diameter of the orifice 8. The air stream in the annular passage 14 is swirled by spiral fins 2b on the elongated body 2. The body 2 has a flange 2a which screws into a block 4 to hold a central spigot portion of the body in a socket on the block 4. An enlargement 1a on the rod is clamped by a nut 6 to a partition 4b in the block 4. The casing 3 has a flange 3a which is clamped against the block 4 by a sleeve 5 screwed on to the block. Fuel is supplied to a central bore in the block and air passes through passages 4d in the block and through holes 2c in the body flange 2a to the annular passage 14. Specification 702,216 is referred to.
