Abstract

A solution for laminating cellulosic material (see Group VIII), comprises (1) a polymerizable polyester of a polybasic acid of which at least the major proportion is an alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (e.g. maleic, fumaric, itaconic or mesaconic) and a polyhydric alcohol of which at least the major proportion is a diol of formula <FORM:0774620/IV(a)/1> where R is an alkylene radical having 2-3 carbon atoms, A is a 2-alkylidene radical having 3-4 carbon atoms, m and n are at least one and the average sum of m and n is not over 3; (2) a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resin; (3) water; and (4) a water-soluble ketone solvent for the polyester (e.g. acetone or methyl ethyl ketone). The solution may also contain a vinyl monomer, e.g. styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, diallyl phthalate, diallyl phenyl phosphonate, the diallyl ester of ethylene glycol dicarbonate or diethylene glycol bis-(mono allyl carbonate) and a vinyl polymerization catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, succinyl peroxide, peracetic acid or tertiary butyl perbenzoate.
