Abstract
The invention comprises reserpic acid esters of the formula <FORM:0774463/IV(b)/1> where Res is the residue of reserpic acid, R is alkyl and R1 is methyl, propyl or butyl; it also includes the compounds (R1=ethyl, R=other than methyl) and salts of all the esters. These are made by known methods from alkyl reserpates or salts thereof, e.g. by reaction with a halide or other functional derivative of an O-carbalkoxy - syringic acid. Alternatively an alkyl O-syringoyl-reserpate is reacted with the appropriate carbonic acid monoester or derivative thereof, e.g. the chloroformate. The products are free bases or salts, depending on the method of formation, and one may be converted into the other by normal methods. Salts may be formed with the same acids as in the parent Specification. Examples are given of the preparation of compounds where R is methyl and ethyl and R1 is methyl, propyl, n-butyl and isobutyl. Methyl O-syringoyl-reserpate is made as in the parent Specification.
