Abstract
773,750. Projectile fuzes. MEFINA, SOC. ANON. July 27, 1955 [Sept. 4, 1954], No. 21685/55. Class 9 (1). Clockwork projectile fuze comprises a spring-stressed striker 1 held by a bolt 3 which is controlled by a bell 4 fixed to a shaft 11 connected to a driving spring 12. The shaft 11 carries a toothed annulus 17 which drives a regulator comprising gears 18, 19, 20, the gear 20 being in driving connection with a balance 22 suspended on the element 23. Enclosing the mechanism is a housing 13, 24 rotatable in the fuze casing 32, the part 24 being closed by a plate 25 which carries means for locking the balance as described in Specification 688,883. The fuze is set by rotating the housing 13, 24 relative to the casing 32, the setting being maintained by the friction between the housing and the casing and by a ring 50 screwed on to the threaded end of the casing 32. During storage a catch or pawl 38 engages a notch 40 in the bell to prevent its rotation, the pawl being held by a stop 44 secured to the base cover 33. At the same time, the striker bolt 3 is aligned with an opening 5 in the housing 13 and is locked by an element 36 secured to the housing. On setting the fuze, the bolt 3 is held by the housing 13 while the pawl 38 is moved away from the stop 44 but remains in the notch 40 until the projectile is fired. A mass 45 then sets back due to inertia and rocks the pawl out of engagement with the bell 4, the mass being held in the rear position by a spring 47 engaging with the casing 32. The bell 4 rotates until the opening 5 is aligned with the bolt, which then moves outwards under centrifugal force. The striker is thus freed and driven forward by its spring 2 ignites the primer (not shown).
