Abstract

773,371. Capacitors. BOSCH GES., R. Aug. 10, 1954 [Aug. 27, 1953], No. 23160/54. Class 37. [Also in Group XXXVII] An arrangement comprising a capacitor or a plurality of capacitors mounted within a sealed oil-filled housing is provided with a circuit-breaking device comprising a member attached to a wall of the housing and operating when the housing is deformed in excess of a predetermined amount as a result of an increase in pressure within the housing, to cause the breakage of a frangible conductor arranged within the housing and forming a part of one of the leads to the capacitor assembly. In a first arrangement, illustrated in Fig. 1, a tinned copper strip 21 is arranged in the lead to the capacitor assembly comprising units 11, 12 and a frame 24 of insulating material is arranged to pass over the strip 21 and through a stirrup 25 affixed to the wall 19 of the housing 10. Upon an increase of pressure within the housing the wall 19 extends outwards and the stirrup 25 draws the frame 24 downwards, thus breaking the strip 21 when a certain excess pressure has been reached. Transverse notches are arranged in the strip 21 at the region where it contacts the frame 24 in order to make the strip more readily frangible. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, a U-shaped strip 31 is arranged in the capacitor lead and is formed with a cut and bent-back portion 34 which is attached to an insulating member 35 affixed to the wall of the housing. A further arrangement, Fig. 4, comprises a lead 47 attached to a terminal cap 46 and soldered to a plate 48 to which the capacitor electrode is also connected. In this arrangement an excess pressure within the housing causes the rupture of the soldered connection. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement wherein a spring- loaded intermediate conductor 53 is arranged between the conductors 51, 52 and is held in place by a member 57 which is attached to the wall of the housing, the member 57 being withdrawn on the occurrence of a predetermined excess pressure whereupon the soldered joint B is fractured due to the action of the spring 55.
