Abstract

772,806. Radio navigation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 4, 1955, No. 19324/55. Class 40(7), Relates to a phase beacon system of the type disclosed in Specification 768,109 in which the directivity pattern of the beacon is as shown in Fig. 2 and is rotated at a frequency of f<SP>1</SP> r.p.s. so that the envelope of the amplitude variation of the signal received at a mobile receiver, Fig. 4, comprises the first, third and fifth harmonics f<SP>1</SP>, f<SP>3</SP> and f<SP>5</SP>, this envelope waveform being detected at 9 and applied through an amplifier 10 to a phase discriminator 20 together with corresponding reference signals of frequency f<SP>1</SP>, f<SP>3</SP> and f<SP>5</SP> derived from a signal transmitted from the beacon. According to the present invention the R.F. energy applied to the directional beacon aerial, Fig. 3 (not shown) is amplitude modulated by a reference signal f<SP>1</SP> and at the mobile receiver, Fig. 4; the subcarrier output from detector 9 is selected by filter 11 and applied through a limiter 12 to an F.M. discriminator 13 giving a reference signal f<SP>1</SP> which is applied through a phase shifter 14 to a distorting circuit 15 producing harmonics f<SP>1</SP>, f<SP>3</SP> and f<SP>5</SP> which are selected by filters 17, 18 and 19 and applied to discriminator 20. The bearing of the receiver is given by the adjustment of phase shifter 14 necesary to produce a zero reading in the centre-zero metre 21 coupled to the output of discriminator 20.
