Abstract
772,103. Forging. KOHLER, F. Aug. 10, 1955 [Aug. 20, 1954; June 13, 1955], No. 23037/55. Drawings to Specification. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of hot-upsetting a head on the end of a steel rod which has been hardened by heat treatment or cold working, comprises inserting the end of the rod in a die and therein heating and upsetting the end in such a manner that the heating to forging temperature is performed rapidly and briefly whereby the mechanical strength of the hardened steel rod is not impaired. The invention is applicable in particular to high-tensile steel re-inforcing rods used in making pre-stressed concrete structures, these rods being cold-twisted before heading whereby they are hardened. The end of the rod after being inserting in the die, is locally heated by a torch or by high frequency induction heating, and is then upset, for example by hand tools. The die and also the part of the rod adjacent the heated end, are preferably cooled by water. An example is given for the upsetting of cold-twisted concrete re-inforceing rods.
