Abstract
772,046. Indicating liquid levels. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 20, 1954 [June 18, 1953], No. 16928/53. Class 123 (1). Apparatus for indicating an interface between two liquids of different thermal con ductivity, for example a flocculated precipitate g and a supernatant liquor contained in a vessel f, comprises a cylindrical casing d from which extend spaced radial arms a, b, locating resistance thermometers connected as arms of a Wheatstone bridge e, and a third arm c which locates a heating element and is disposed adjacent the arm a. With the apparatus suspended in the liquor and the bridge circuit balanced, should the level of the precipitate g rise the heat transfer from the arm c to the arm a will change and upset the balance of the said circuit, and the out-of-balance current may be adapted to actuate a relay connected to a visual or other signal or to operate a valve, &c. for modifying liquor flow into or out of the vessel f. Alternatively, with the bridge balanced as above, the apparatus may be moved slowly downwards until the balance is upset, indicating that the arm c has reached the interface.
