Abstract
771,931. Modulating systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 20, 1954 [Sept. 21, 1953], No. 27148/54. Class 40(5) High frequency electromagnetic waves travelling through waveguides 1, 2 are modulated by applying a polarizing electric field varying with the desired modulation to a tapered, dielectric body 5 of barium or strontium titanate or mixtures of titanates with zirconates, stannates, tantalates or niobates. The device is operated at a temperature at which the damping is a maximum in the absence of the applied field. The operative frequency is chosen to be such that the sensitivity of the device is a maximum. The body may be prepolarized. Specifications 674,874 and 693,596 are referred to.
