Abstract

771,599. Constructional elements. BEREND, P. C. Jan. 21, 1955 [March 11, 1954], No. 7137/54. Class 20(2) A constructional element comprises a bar of right-angle L section wherein each flange contains a plurality of slots spaced along the entire length of the flange, and wherein the alternate slots in a flange are of similar right-angle chevron shape having their apices pointing in the same direction transversely to the length of the bar. As shown in Fig. 1, the constructional element has equal flanges 1, 2, each flange containing a similar series of right-angle chevron shaped slots 5-8 with their apices aligned with respect to the length of the bar along an axis Y-Y which is spaced from the inside of the bend of the bar at a distance equal to the slot pitch d. Alternate slots are staggered to form two oppositely facing rows in one of which the apices of the slots 6, 8 point transversely outwardly with respect to the bend of the bar, and in the other of which the apices of the slots 5, 7 point transversely inwardly with respect to the bend. The extremities of the arms of each slot are spaced at a distance equal to the slot pitch d. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ,two flanges of the bar are of unequal width. The Specification gives examples of a right angled lap joint, a telescopic lap joint and a right angle box joint formed from the constructional elements and also describes a shelf and a hinge for use with the constructional elements. It is stated that the slots may be modified from the two-limbed or symmetrical design, whilst keeping the general chevron shape. Also the slots in one row, say 5, 7 may be of different shape. Further rows of slots such as 5, 7 and 6, 8 may be added in a wider flanged bar. In another modification the apices of the slots of the inner row 6, 8 point inwards towards the bend and the apices of the sl'ots of the outer row 5, 7 point outwards. The joints may be made with a fixing bolt 10, Fig. 4, having a locking spur 11 formed under the head 15 for engagement in the slot in the element 3 through which the bolt is passed. Alternatively the spur 11 may be formed on the nut 16. Specification 718,521 is referred to.
