Abstract
In an improvement of the method claimed in the parent Specification of effecting incomplete combustion of methane or other hydrocarbon with oxygen, or gas containing at least 50 per cent oxygen, in an internal combustion engine for simultaneous production of mechanical energy and combustion products such as synthesis gas and carbon black, which method comprises mixing the fuel and oxygen to form a combustion mixture containing insufficient oxygen for the complete combustion of the fuel and feeding the mixture to an intermediate container in which it is stored at a pressure at which it is not ignitable and from whence it is fed to the engine, only a proportion of from 50 per cent to 98 per cent of the oxygen or gas containing oxygen is admixed with the fuel before the latter reaches the intermediate container, the remainder being added to the mixture during its passage from the container to the engine. The mixture from the container and the remaining oxygen are thoroughly mixed by baffles in the intake pipe and a backflash preventing means is provided upstream of the point at which the remaining oxygen is added. The feed of the remainder of the oxygen is regulated in accordance with the flow of the mixture from the container and the pressure in the pipe feeding the remainder of the oxygen is maintained below the pressure in the intake pipe when the engine is stopped to prevent an accumulation of oxygen in the intake pipe.
