A metal frame for a fireplace opening comprises channel section uprights 11, 12 and a cross-piece 13, reinforced by L- shaped corner backing pieces 15 and straight backing pieces 17 at the bottom of the uprights. Intermediate backing pieces 20 may be provided. Angle section strips 23 are bolted to the backing pieces with one flange projecting rearwardly round the fireplace opening, and brackets 27 are also bolted to the intermediate backing pieces to provide lugs for embedding in the concrete or other material of the fireplace. The flanges of the outer frame' members are bent inwardly. to secure the backing pieces.
