Impulse transformers 1, 2 which may supply impulses to the grids of electric discharge tubes carry premagnetizing windings 11, 12 fed from source 3 through valve 4, which is maintained cut-off by the voltage across capacitor 7 while this is kept fully charged from D.C. source 5. When switch 14 is opened, capacitor 7 discharges through resistor 8 during a period determined by the value of the resistor. During this period the change of voltage on the grid of valve 4 allows a continuously increasing current to flow through the premagnetizing windings which results in a continuously changing phase angle of the impulses supplied to the discharge tubes from transformer secondary windings 21, 22. The transformer has a D.C. biasing winding the direction of current in which determines whether the flux rises or falls during the period. The alternating current input to windings 41, 42 has a triangular waveform. Valve 4 may be replaced by a transistor.
