Abstract
770,768. Internal shoe-drum brakes. SHEEPBRIDGE ENGINEERING, Ltd., and SELMAN, L._K. May 3, 1955 [March 1, 1954], No. 5995/54. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] In a centrifugally engaged friction clutch or brake, having shoes 18 mounted by links 23 and rubber bushes 22 on an inner driving hub 10, the rubber bushes being torsionally prestressed to draw the shoes radially inwards against centrifugal force biasing them outwards to engage with a driven drum (not shown), each shoe is provided with a web 26 carrying an inclined plate 27 sliding on and guided by a pivotally mounted slipper 28 on the driving hub in such a way that as the shoe 18 moves out to engage the surrounding drum, it remains substantially concentric with the driving hub. The slipper 28 is pivoted on a pin 29 having its centre portion eccentric to its two end portions, one end portion 31 being threaded to engage a tapped hole in the driving member and carrying a lock-nut 32. The links 23 are inclined with respect to the direction of rotation of the driving hub 10 in such a way as to give servo assistance to the engagement of the shoes 18 with the surrounding drum. Inwards movement of each shoe is limited by a fibre pad 34 on the driving hub. In use, the leading edge of the shoe is arranged to contact the surrounding drum slightly before the trailing edge. As a modification, the flat edge of the slipper 28 can be given a cam form. According to the Provisional Specification, the plate 27 &c. can be replaced by a peg and roller arrangement.
