Abstract
In preparing polyethylene from crude lowpurity ethylene gas containing 30-70 per cent by volume of ethylene, the remainder being chiefly ethane with a trace of oxygen, the oxygen content is reduced to below 0.03 per cent and polymerization effected at 50 DEG to 200 DEG C. under 1000-25,000 lb./sq. inch pressure in the presence of a diluent-modifier and a peroxy catalyst. The gas may be de-oxidized to the required level by passage through a hot tube packed with copper granules. A diluent-modifier such as an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon having 6 to 8 carbon atoms and free from aliphatic unsaturation such as hexane, n-heptane, iso-octane and benzene, and a catalyst such as t-butyl, benzoyl and cyclohexanone peroxides and cumene hydroperoxide are added to the de-oxidized gas and the mixture continuously polymerized, e.g. at 148 DEG C. and 300 lb./sq. inch. The diluent, free from formaldehyde, is stripped from the resulting polymer which has a molecular weight of 1500 to 5000 Staudinger and may be used as a modifier for waxes and petroleum products.
