Abstract

Copolymers of nuclear substituted alkyl styrenes and drying or semi-drying oils are obtained by introducing 1 to 400 per cent of the styrene vapour into the oils heated to 300-500 DEG F., preferably 450 DEG F. Oils mentioned are linseed, conophor, stillingia, perilla, isano, tobaccoseed, soyabean, nigerseed, dehydrated castor, tung and oiticica oils. Run copal, colophony, alkyd and phenolic resins or cyclopentadiene may be included. The process may be carried out continuously or batchwise. The copolymer may be heated at 450-600 DEG F. to yield a stand oil. Specification 711,141 is referred to.
