Abstract

Textiles made wholly or partly of synthetic materials are made less liable to electrostatic charging by treatment with a neutral addition product of an alkylene oxide to an acidic phosphoric acid ester of a hydroxyl compound containing six or more carbon atoms. The preferred alkylene oxide is ethylene oxide, but propylene oxide and glycide may also be used. The hydroxyl compounds, of which a number are specified, may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic and may contain substituents or be interrupted by heteroatoms, but are preferably fatty alcohols. The phosphoric esters are made from them by esterification with phosphorus pentoxide or phosphorus oxychloride or with pyrophosphoric acid or those phosphoric acids which contain less water than the pyroacid, and 1-4 molecular proportions of alkylene oxide are used in the neutralization reaction for each acid group present in the ester. The final neutral product is used in concentrations of 1-30 gm. or more per litre either in aqueous solution or dispersion for direct application to the textiles, or in conjunction with spooling or twist oils, in which event lubricants and brightening and hygroscopic agents may also be added.ALSO:Spooling or twist oils which prevent the electrostatic charging of synthetic textiles contain the neutral products made by the addition of an alkylene oxide to an acidic phosphoric acid ester of a hydroxyl compound containing six or more carbon atoms. The preferred alkylene oxide is ethylene oxide, but propylene oxide and glycide may also be used. The hydroxyl compounds, of which a number are specified, may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic and may contain substituents or be interrupted by hetero-atoms, but are preferably fatty alcohols. The phosphoric esters are made from them by esterification with phosphorus pentoxide or phosphorus oxychloride or with pyrophosphoric acid or those phosphoric acids which contain less water than the pyroacid and 1-4 molecular proportions of alkylene oxide are used in the neutralization reaction for each acid group present in the ester. The spooling or twist oils may contain lubricants (e.g. mineral, animal and vegetable oils, fats or waxes), other emulsifying and dispersing agents, hydroscopic agents (e.g. glycerine, glycols, urea or inorganic salts) and brightening agents. The spooling or twist oils are applied to the textiles as aqueous dispersions, the alkylene oxide addition products acting as emulsifying agents.
