Abstract
768,855. Heating baths. BALESTRA, O. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 13, 1953; March 20, 1954; Oct. 27, 1954], No. 32097/54. Class 72 [Also in Groups XII, XIII and XXVIII] In the heat treatment without oxidation of metal articles such as steel blanks P, they are heated in a rotary drum furnace 1 containing a bath B of molten glass, and provided with axial openings 2 and 3 for their introduction and removal a burner R, and a number of transverse segmental lugs 5 spaced apart along the drum. The lugs are formed with concave seats 6 for the blanks and also with sloping sides 7 the inclination of which varies in sets along the furnace axis. Rotation of the furnace through 180 degrees in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 2) rolls the blanks off the seats 6 into the molten glass and reversal into the original position rolls the glasscoated blanks back on to the seats. The blanks are gradually traversed along the drum due to the changing inclination of the side 7. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), lugs 5 are provided only at each end, the blanks being traversed through the drum by any suitable implements. A further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), has only one lug 5 at the discharge end. The blanks are heated partly by the burner flame, and partly by their immersion in the molten glass. The layer of molten glass formed on the blanks protects them from oxidation outside the bath and has a hot pickling action in that it absorbs any oxide film.
