Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized or copolymerized with other substances copolymerizable therewith, such as styrene, butadiene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, propylene, butylene, isobutylene or carbon monoxide by exposing the monomers to the action of g -rays at a temperature of from 10 DEG to 75 DEG C. and a pressure of from 80 to 200 atmospheres. The g -rays are preferably of energy up to 4 m.e.v. and may be derived from cobalt 60, caesium 137 or from uranium slugs or radioactive waste products from an atomic pile.
