Abstract
Aromatic di-carboxylic acids are prepared by oxidizing di-alkylbenzenes with aqueous nitric acid in the presence of 1-3 per cent by weight of the oxidation solution of a compound of vanadium, chromium, manganese or iron, or of mixtures of such compounds. Compounds mentioned are manganese carbonate, manganese dioxide, alkali-metal permanganates, ferric nitrate and vanadyl sulphate. The oxidation may be effected by heating a mixture of aqueous nitric acid of a concentration of 10-50 per cent by weight and the metal compound or compounds to boiling, and adding the dialkyl benzene. The concentration of nitric acid in the mixture is maintained by continuously or periodically adding more highly concentrated nitric acid. After separation of the aromatic di-carboxylic acid product, the mother liquor may be used for further similar oxidations without further addition of metal compound. The process may be conducted in a continuous manner and under pressure and at raised temperatures. In examples: (1) p-diethylbenzene, 30 per cent nitric acid, and potassium permanganate are heated to boiling, further p-diethylbenzene and 98 per cent nitric acid being continually added during the reaction, and the precipitated terephthalic acid product is separated, the reaction liquors being used for a further similar oxidation with the addition of p-diethylbenzene and 98 per cent nitric acid; a similar oxidation omitting the potassium permanganate is described; (2) the oxidation of p-diisopropylbenzene with nitric acid in the presence of manganese carbonate, ferric nitrate and vanadyl sulphate to yield terephthalic acid is described.
