Abstract
768,409. Suction cleaner nozzles. HOOVER, Ltd. April 4, 1955 [April 5, 1954], No. 9831/55. Class 8(1) The mouth 21<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 10, of a suction cleaner nozzle is partially closed by a flexible annular diaphragm 22<SP>1</SP> having its outer peripheral edge sealed to the nozzle wall 20<SP>1</SP> and its inner free edge 27<SP>1</SP> secured to a carpet agitator 28<SP>1</SP> so as to vibrate up and down therewith, the upward stroke being effected by vacuum within the nozzle body and the downward stroke by compression springs 30<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 8, which force the agitator 28<SP>1</SP> into sealing engagement with the carpet. A vertically adjustable skid 45<SP>1</SP> having ribbed litter-picking portions 47<SP>1</SP> is held spaced below the nozzle mouth 21<SP>1</SP> by rods 62 so as to allow access of atmospheric pressure to the underside of the diaphragm 22<SP>1</SP> when the agitator 28<SP>1</SP> contacts the carpet, and to ensure the seal being broken. Height adjustment of the rods 62 and hence of the skid 45<SP>1</SP> is effected by a U-shaped actuating lever 66, Fig. 9, having upturned tabs 67 pivoted by a pin 69 to the nozzle body and held against a compression spring 75 by a screw-threaded post 70 and adjusting knob 79. In a modification the skid is non- adjustably spaced below the nozzle mouth.
