Abstract

768,285. Chain strainers. EASTERN ROTORCRAFT CORPORATION. Nov. 19, 1954 [Nov. 27, 1953], No. 33548/54. Class 45. [Also in Groups XXV and XXX] A securing device for transferring load from a chain 11 includes a frame, a chain engaging block 17 supported in the frame by a pivot 18 which is transverse to the direction of pull or tension and a latch 22 mounted in the frame in position to hold the block in operative loaded position, the latch being movable to release the block for pivotal movement to a position to disengage the chain, the block incorporating a pocket 35 to accommodate the anchored link. The frame consists of two plates 15 separated by spacers and the block 17 is arranged at one end and a hook 16 is mounted at the other end. The latch 22 is pivotally mounted in the frame and in its operative position engages legs 20 which extend from the block 17. The latch is released by a handle 25. This is freely mounted on the pivot which supports the latch 22 and is slidable in slots 24 in the latch and to permit this the aperture which surrounds its pivot is elongated. The end of the handle engages notches 29 in the frame to hold the latch in its operative position and the handle is kept in this position by a spring 32 one end of which engages the handle and the other end of which engages a secondary latch 30. To release the latch 22 the handle is slid relatively to the latch 22 until its end is free of the notch 29 and the latch 22 can then be pivoted out of the path of the legs 20. To engage the chain the block 17 is provided with a slot 33 through which a link of the chain can be slid sideways. The next link in the chain is received in the pocket 35 underneath the slot 33 and supports the load. This link is prevented from coming out of the pocket by the secondary latch member 30. This member is pivotally mounted on the same pivot as the latch 22 and its movement to its engaged position is limited by flanges which bear on the latch 22. It can be depressed manually against the force of the spring 32 to release the chain but when the chain is to be engaged with the block 17 the entry of the chain into the slot 33 automatically depresses this latch. The hook 16 is slidably mounted in the frame by means of spacers 47 which pass through a slot 39 and it has serrations 40 in each of its edges which are engaged by an internally threaded collar 44. Rotation of this collar by means of a knob 45 moves the hook longitudinally for the purpose of tensioning the chain.
