Abstract
767,914. Combined disc and drum brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 28, 1955 [June 1, 1954], No. 8987/55. Class 103 (1). A combined disc and drum brake has flat side plates 68 lined with friction material 66 which are pressed into engagement with the inner radial sides of a drum by one pair of ends of levers 76, the levers being pivoted centrally upon fulcrums 85 and closed at their other ends by a fluid pressure piston and cylinder 80, 72. The side plates coact at their non-actuated ends with cam balls 60 which provide a self-energizing characteristic at a result of the drum drag on the side plates. The balls 60 rests internally in recesses in a member 54 mounted in a bushing 56, which passes perpendicularly through the web 38 of a friction shoe 36 pivoted upon a collar 30 fixed to a back or anchor plate 34. Circumferential movement of the plates 68 thus, through balls 60, causes radial pivotal movement of the shoes 36 against the force of torsional retraction springs 50 to engage the linings 64 with the drum. Automatic adjustment mechanism comprising a pin 102 gripped by a spring friction member 92 so as to set the clearance at the play of a pin 108 in opening 106 is provided for the shoes 36. Pairs of oppositely diametrically disposed plates 68 and shoes 36 are shown.
