Sewage enters at A a primary settling tank A<SP>1</SP>, floating impurities being retained in the centre of the tank by a partition C, and sludge passing through an outlet D into a digestor tank E having an agitator F for re-suspending floating sludge. Clarified supernatant flows over the top of a weir in the partition wall H into troughs J above a trickling filter T having a closed top and a downdraught-creating fan I. Air and gas emerge at M while liquid flows down a pipe N into a final settling tank O and is discharged at S.
