Abstract

767,647. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. March 18, 1955 [March 25, 1954; April 7, 1954; May 14, 1954], No. 8023/55. Class 8(1) A substantial part of the weight of a motor-fan suction cleaner of the canister type is taken by a cushion of air formed by first restricting the fan exhaust by a cupshaped casing member 45 Fig. 1 and then transmitting the superatmospheric pressure thus developed through a blower socket 46 to the space between the underside of the cleaner casing member 45 and the carpet 55 and which is enclosed by a cleaner-supporting skirt 48. The carpet contacting surface of the skirt provides a skid 49 under which the air passes to atmosphere. In a modification the blower socket 61 Fig. 2 is offset from the centre of the end cover 60 and is aligned with an aperture 66 in a top 65 of the skidforming supporting base 62 hinged to the casing 1<SP>1</SP>. The end 60 and top 65 are held spaced apart by bosses 71, 72 provide a bypass such that the cushion of air is sufficient to allow of easy movement of the cleaner casing over the carpet only when the nozzle 43<SP>1</SP> is removed therefrom, resulting in increased air flow. In a further modification the air cushion lifts the skid 148 Fig. 6 from the carpet 157 and the cleaner is maintained stable by a carpet contacting sealing ring 152 capable of vertical movement on guide studs 153 carried by a casing skirt 145 and serving to deflect escaping air through round deodering and filtering material 155 and slots 154 in the skirt 145. In a still further modification the cleaner casing comprises upper and lower hinged hemispherical sections 202, 203 Fig. 10 secured together by a toggle clamp 205 and held by coil springs 292 (only one of which is shown) and ball bearings 263, 261 carried by leaf springs 264 'and brackets 261 respectively within generally hemispherical outer casing members 245, 246 secured together by toggles 252. On pulling the suction hose 238 against the coil springs 292 the cleaner casing portions 202, 203 are displaced relative to the outer casing so that normally aligned apertures 265, 266 in adjacent portions of the lower parts of the inner, and outer casings become blocked thus preventing by-pass of fan exhaust through an annular passage 272 and forcing it through the hose socket 286 to the cushioning space from which the air escapes under an annular skid 275. In a further modification by-pass apertures 351, 373 Fig. 12 in the cleaner casing 203<SP>1</SP> and a valve disc 370 respectively are moved out of register by a pedal 375 so as to force the fan exhaust through the blower hose socket 286<SP>1</SP> to the cushioning space when it is desired to move the cleaner about the carpet. The invention is also applicable to a cleaner of the horizontal cannister type.
