Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0767588/IV(b)/1> where R is a hydrogen atom or an amino group, R1, R3 and R4 are alkyl groups, R2 is a phenyl, nitrophenyl or aminophenyl radical and X is an anion, and their preparation by condensing a phenanthridine of the general formula <FORM:0767588/IV(b)/2> where Y is an anion which may be the same as X, with a halopyrimidine of the formula <FORM:0767588/IV(b)/3> where A is a halogen atom and Z is an anion which may be the same as X, and if necessary replacing Y and Z by X. The condensation is suitably carried out by heating the reactants under reflux in aqueous acid solution. Products in which R2 is an aminophenyl group may also be made by initially forming a product wherein R2 is nitrophenyl and reducing the nitro group. In examples there are prepared by the above methods, 7 - (21 - amino - 61 - methylpyrimidyl - 41 - amino) - 9 - phenylphenanthridine 10 : 11 - dimethiodide and the corresponding 10 : 11-dimethomethanesulphonate ; 2 - amino - 7 - (21 - amino - 61 - methylpyrimidyl - 41 - amino) - 9 - phenylphenanthridine 10 : 11 - dimethiodide and the corresponding 10 : 11-dimethomethane-sulphonate ; 2 - amino - 7 - (21 - amino - 61 - methylpyrimidyl - 41 - amino) - 9 - p - nitrophenylphenanthridine 10 : 11 - dimethochloride; 2 - amino - 7 - (21 - amino - 61 - methylpyrimidyl-41 - amino) - 9 - p - aminophenylphenanthridine 10 : 11 - dimethobromide ; 7 - (21 - amino - 61 - methylpyrimidyl - 41 - amino) - 9 - p - nitrophenylphenanthridine 10 : 11 - dimethiodide and the corresponding 10 : 11-dimethomethanesulphonate; 7 - (21 - amino - 61 - methylpyrimidyl - 41 - amino) - 9 - p - aminophenylphenanthridine 10 : 11 - dimethiodide ; 2 - amino - 7 - (21 - amino - 61 - methylpyrimidyl - 41 - amino) - 9 - phenylphenanthridine 10 - ethiodide 11-methiodide and 2-amino-7-(21-amino11:61 - dimethylpyrimidyl - 41 - amino) - 9 - phenyl - 10 - ethylphenanthridinium dimethanesulphonate.
