Abstract
767,486. Frequency modulation; testing radio apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and EASTER B. Jan. 18 .1955 [Jan. 18, 1954], No. 1459/54, Class 40(5) An oscillator 4 has a 180 degrees phase shift network 8, 6, 7, 10 between its output and input and a reactance valve 21 connected across part (6, 8, 9) of the network and modulated by a signal input at 25 so that frequency modulation of the oscillator is produced, and means, such as a capacitor 14, for varying mechanically the phase shift to cyclically vary the mean frequency of the oscillator, at a slower rate, over a wide frequency range. The network may comprise two # networks in cascade. The fresuency modulation may be over Π100 Kc/s by a modulating frequency of 120 Kc/s and the slow frequency variation may be over a band 50-70 Mc/s and effected by a synchronous motor, of speed 25 c/s, driving a split stator capacitor 14. Alternatively capacitors 8, 10 may constitute the variable capacitor 14, or each section of the network may be shunted by a modulated reactance valve. The oscillator range may be adjusted by a variable capacitor 10, or variable capacitor in parallel with the capacitor 8 or inductances 6, 7. Specification 767,484 [Group XXXVI] is referred to.
