Abstract

767,438. Making press tools; punching. K.A.C., Ltd. (Sarno, A. J.). Feb. 22, 1955 [Feb. 22, 1954], No. 5197/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group VIII] In making a press tool for cutting out blanks from sheet material such as metal and comprising a punch and a die, each consisting of a base having a slot conforming to the outline of the blank, and a strip-like blade inserted -in the slot, the blade strips for the punch and die are placed one upon the other and bent simultaneously in the closest contiguity to the form of the slots. Slots 3, 4, Fig. 2, of width equal to twice the thickness of the blade strips and corresponding to the outline of the blank are cut through a block 5 of plastic or wood, e.g. maple plywood, laminated plastic or plastic bonded plywood. Pairs of carbon steel strips of width equal to two-thirds of the depth of the block are placed one upon the other and bent together round the portions 7, 8 of the block to form the blades 9, 10, 11, 12, Figs. 5 ... 7. Packing strips 13, 14, 15, 16 of the same or slightly greater thickness than and of half the width of the blades are bent similarly to the required shape. The portions 6, 7, 8 of the block 5 are cut to form the parts 6<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>1</SP> and 6<SP>11</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP> , 8<SP>11</SP> constituting the base members of the punch and die and the packing strips 13 ... 16 and blades 9... 12 are inserted in the slots. Rubber pads 17, 18 or knock-out pins serve as work ejectors. The punch and die may be provided with aligning pins and bushes and piercing punches and co-operating sleeves. In a modification the base members are made from separate blocks, the slots are cut simultaneously with the blocks superimposed, and after the blades have been inserted parts of the base members are cut away by a routing tool as required. In this case the slots may not completely divide the blocks but bridging pieces may be left, and suitable recesses in the blade and packing strips be provided. Specification 583,949 is referred to.
