Abstract

The alkali metal salts of dyes of the general formula:-<FORM:0767262/IV(b)/1> wherein R is an alkyl group, R1 is an alkyl, substituted alkyl or allyl group, n is 0 or 1 and Z completes a heterocyclic ring are prepared by treating a merocyanine dye of the formula:- <FORM:0767262/IV(b)/2> wherein R2 is an alkoxy group, with aqueous caustic alkali. The free acids of the first formula above are obtained by acidifying the alkali metal salts. In the examples, R is ethyl, Z completes a benzthiazole or quinoline ring and R1 is carboxymethyl or allyl. A list of nuclei which Z may complete is given. 3-carboxymethyl -5[2 - (3 - ethyl - 2 - benzthiazolylidene) 1 - ethoxy - ethylidene] - 2 - thio - 4 - thiazolone is prepared by refluxing 2-ethythiobenzthiazole etho-p-toluene sulphonate with 3-carbethoxymethyl-5-(a-ethoxyethylidine) rhodanine in ethanol in the presence of triethylamino. French Specification 1,018,590 is referred to.
