765,931. Land mine fuzes. MONTECATINI SOC. GENERALE PER L'INDUSTRIA MINERARIA E. CHIMICA. July 31, 1952 [Oct. 24, 1951], No. 15870/55 Class 9 (2). An ampoule for a fuze, which may be used in non-metallic land mines, has a frangible shell into which a substance or a mixture of substances is introduced in a condensed state, the substance or the mixture being such that gas can be generated in the ampoule after closure thereof, the rate of generation and the quantity of gas generated being controlled externally of the ampoule. The substance may be commercial hydrogen peroxide, a predetermined volume of 100 volumes concentration being introduced into a glass ampoule. The ampoule is then cooled to 0‹C, the contents slightly alkalised and the neck of the ampoule welded by a flame while the ampoule is immersed in a cooling bath. The closed ampoule is then immersed in a liquid bath and brought to a temperature of 40‹C to initiate decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide and then control the decomposition by absorption of the heat evolved. The gas pressure within the finished ampoule may be 1 to 30 atmospheres.
