765,889. Bag-making. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Sept. 9, 1955 [Sept. 16,1954], No. 26820/54. Class 94(2). [Also in Group VIII] Bag-making apparatus in which a blank 14 of sheet material is first folded about a former 10 to form a tube with an overlapping longitudinal seam, an overhanging portion of the tube then being folded on to the end face of the former 10 to complete one end closure, and the bag stripped from the former, comprises a heated presser member 19 resiliently urged by compression springs 27 towards the former, and means for causing a relative longitudinal movement between the member 19 and the former 10 during the sealing operation. Formers 10 are mounted on a rotatable member 11, and each is provided with a nipping member 13 spring- urged towards engagement with the blank 14 and operated by a fixed cam 16 and a roller 17 secured to a lever 18 which carries the nipping member 13. At the sealing station a carriage 24 pivotally carrying a shaft 23 to which is secured an arm 32 and the heat sealing device, is moved along rods 26. A roller 33 on the arm 32 engages a cam track 34 and tilts the pressers 19, the sealing plates 28 of which are heated by electric heaters 29, to contact and slide along the seam on each side of the nipping member 13. The pressers 19 are lifted from the seam as the carriage 24 moves back to its original position.
