A teleprinter having a transmitting arrangement operated by a keyboard or by a perforated tape, according to choice, includes a change-over arrangement dependent on a tapeexploring member in such manner that the change-over from perforated-tape operation to the condition for keyboard operation takes place automatically in the event of an interruption in the tape. The absence of tape may be due to tearing or to the exhaustion of the supply of perforated tape. For tape operation, the shaft 17 is in the position shown in which it is latched by a pivoted detent 13 and positions a member 18 so that the transmitter shaft 19 is permitted to rotate continuously. During each revolution of the shaft 19 a cam 27 rocks a lever 24 carrying a pin 23 engaging a rod 21 which is rotated so that its upper end slides on the end portion 6 of a feeler lever 4 mounted on a stirrup member 5. The opposite end of the lever 4 lightly engages the tape 1 through a window 3 in a guide member 2. When the tape supply is interrupted the feeler 4 is rocked clockwise by its spring 7 so that the rod 21 when subsequently actuated under control of the cam 27 engages the end portion 6 and rocks the stirrup 5 so that its projecting member 11 rocks the detent 13 clear of a toothed lug 16 on the shaft 17 which is rotated clockwise by a spring 15. The rotation of the shaft 17 actuates the member 18 so that the shaft 19 is brought under the control of the keyboard and is released for one revolution on each actuation of key lever. Additionally, the movement of the cam 31 allows the lever 28 to move so that a lateral extension 29 rocks the rod 21 out of operating range of the pin 23 on the lever 24. The machine is restored to tape operation by anticlockwise rotation of the shaft 17 by a knob 20. The change to keyboard operation may be effected manually by moving the shaft 17 axially against the action of a spring (not shown) so that its rotation is effected by the spring 15 after disengagement of the toothed lug 16 from the detent 13.
