Class 59 A grinder for food waste and the like comprises a power-driven bowl-shaped rotor 14 having the form of a disc-like base 51 with an upwardly-sloping ring 52 which co-operates with cutting teeth 53 on a stationary ring 61, centrifugal force caused by rotation of the rotor urging the material to be ground upwardly along the inner surface of the bowl rim 52 into engagement with the cutting teeth and urging ground material radially outward over the edge of the bowl rim. The teeth 53 have lower cutting edges 54 and are divided by notches 72 into cutting elements 73. The ring 61 has a bevelled lower edge 68 the outer edge of which is provided with radial discharge slots 67 the bottoms and ends of which form cutting elements 69. The bowl has a raised peripheral ridge 77 provided with secondary cutting teeth 78, Fig. 1, or 79, Fig. 2. Alternatively, the secondary cutting teeth may be formed on a continuous band which is removably fitted on the periphery of the bowl 14. The bowl 14 is provided with a pair of driving vanes 56 which impart whirling motion to the material to be ground, the upper ends of the vanes serving as grinding teeth. The bowl 14 and ring 61 are arranged in the lower end of a housing 11 which is provided with a tangential water inlet 28. The base 51 of the bowl has drain openings 60. The housing is formed with mulling projections 75 and teeth 81, and is supported on a floor 17 below a sink or drainboard 16 by means of adjustable legs 18 having adjustably secured within the lower ends thereof studs 20 provided with rubber feet 21. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown) the discharge slots are formed in the upper edge of the bowl and the secondary cutting teeth in the lower edge of the stationary ring, the secondary cutting teeth being disposed radially outwardly of the discharge slots.
