In a gas-scrubber, the gas admitted at 12 rises, in counterflow to downwardly sprayed liquid, in unpacked spray-chambers 10, the liquid being collected at the bottom of each chamber by a tray 27 having a central gas channel 30 and a downcomer to take overflow to the tray next below, the gas being redistributed over the section of the chamber 10, whilst being contacted with descending liquid, by a perforated plate or plates 23, the sprays 18 being spaced from the plate, or topmost plate, 23 at a distance greater than the distance between the said plate and the tray 27. The liquid is prevented from falling directly through the channel 30 by a cap 34, and a de-mister 33 of woven or knitted wire prevents excessive entrainment of liquid from one chamber 10 to another. The liquid is recirculated from each tray 27 to the same chamber 10, the fresh liquid, which would be de-benzolized straw oil if the apparatus is used for removing benzole from coal gas, being admitted to the nozzles 18 of the top or final washing chamber which is surmounted by a de-misting chamber leading to the gas outlet pipe. The re-circulating pumps, individual to each chamber 10, are situated at ground level.
