Abstract

764,620. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Oct. 29, 1954 [Nov. 2, 1953], No. 31288/54. Class 100(4) A print impression mechanism for recording characters on a record sheet R comprises a movable printer head 11 having a character pattern formed by the selective movement of a group of printing wires, a movable platen 30, and means for simultaneously moving the printer head 11 and the platen 30 towards one another to effect impression. As shown, the impression mechanism is applied to a wire printer of the kind described in Specification 729,064 in which printing wires 10 are displaced according to the setting of a control bar 22. All the sheaths 17 of the wires 10 are, at the printing end, clamped in a cam follower arm 24 so that once in each cycle they are moved resiliently by spring 42 towards the platen 30 which is formed by a resilient steel band attached to supports 33, 34 adjustably mounted on rods 36, 37 so that tension of the platen 30 may be changed. This platen is rapidlymoved towards the print head 11 five times - per cycle by means of a striker roller 26 carried on an arm 27 fixed to a gear 28. On the third movement the printing head 11 has reached printing position and the platen 30 is thus able to cause a rapid and intense printing impression to be made on the record R. The wires each have inertia slugs 13 and are frictionally held in a displaced position in the sheaths 17 so that the ends of the wires are automatically aligned during the impression stroke. Printing may be suppressed either by energization of magnet coil 43 which pivots a lever 46 into the path of end 47 of the arm 24, or by the manual activation of levers 48 so that a dog 50 enters a notch 51 in the arm 24.
