Abstract

764,199. Alarms; regulating. PLATT, E. C. Oct. 26, 1954, No. 30843/54. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (6). Indication of wasteful fuel usage in a motor vehicle engine is given by additional resistance to depression of an accelerator pedal 22, Fig. 3, when a spring-loaded loose collar 190 on a link 183 connected to the pedal 22 contacts an arm 187 positioned jointly by fluid-pressure motors 205. 206 respectively subjected to intake manifold suction and cooling water pressure. In addition the arm 187 carries a switch 138 operable by contact with the collar 190 to light a red dashboard lamp 151 instead of a green lamp 152, the circuits being controlled by a cut-off switch 146. The accelerator pedal 22 operates the carburetter throttle 20 via a fluid-pressure bellows 167 contractible under intake manifold suction so as to tend to prevent suction fluctuations. In a modification, the link 183 acts on the throttle itself, which is connected to the accelerator pedal by a spring link. In another modification, the fluid pressure motors 84, 98, Fig. 1, swing a pivoted abutment 120 in the path of a pin 127 on one member 124 of a spring link the other member 134 of which is connected to a lever 50, in the linkage between the accelerator pedal 22 and carburetter throttle 20, either via a manifold-suction-operated motor 54 or, at very low manifold suctions when the diaphragms of the motor 54 and a like motor 68 mounted on the member 134 have moved over from the positions shown, via an abutment 74 and a spring 80 stronger than the link spring 131.
