Abstract
764,097. Vehicle wheels; disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Sept. 14, 1954 [Sept. 28, 1953], No. 26648/54. Addition to 760,877. Classes 103 (1) and 144 (1). In a wheel as claimed in the parent Specification, the wheel body comprises two plates 19, 30 connected together by a series of brakeoperating fluid-pressure cylinders 94. Figs. 1 and 3 show a steerable wheel assembly wherein a central non-rotatable axle-receiving hub barrel 10 has a pair of opposed radial king- pins 14 received in needle-roller bearing. assemblies 15 which are clamped between complementary bearing cups 24, 25 and 35, 36 formed in two non-rotatable wheel plates 19, 30, respectively. The plates 19, 30 have central apertures 23, 24 for projection therethrough of the hub barrel 10 and are bolted together through matching holes 29, 40. Securing bolts 94, which extend through matching holes 26 and 37 in the plates 19, 30, are formed hollow to serve as hydraulic brake-operating cylinders, matching holes 27, 38 accommodating brake return-spring carrying bolts 100. The peripheries of the plates 19, 30 are formed as peripherally recessed mating axial flanges 22, 33 which together define an annular channel seating and clamping the inner races 46, 47 of a double-thrust roller bearing assembly 45, the outer race 49 of which is clamped between two spacer members 56, 57, the two wheelrim halves 62, 63 being bolted together on opposite sides of the spacer members by through bolts 60. Brake assembly.-A non-rotatable brakecarrier drum 75 pinned to a central boss 20 of the plate 19 has an annular series of keys 78 bolted thereto and projecting at their axially inner ends through apertures 79 in the plate 19. The keys 78 slidably support for axial movement a series of stator discs 77 which are faced with friction material and interleaved with rotor segments 82 slidably mounted in keyways provided by keys 83 anchored to the underside of the rim half 62. A non-rotatable reaction plate 89 is screwed on to a carrier ring 90 fixed on the outer end of the keys 78 by nuts 91. The brake assembly is operated through a pressure plate 92 which is actuated by an annular series of pistons 93 carried in the hydraulic cylinders 94 against the action of an annular series of return springs 99 on the bolts 100. Fig. 4 shows a non-steerable wheel comprising two non-rotatable wheel plates 105, 106 having mating peripherally inner and outer axial flanges 107, 108 and 109, 110 respectively, the inner flanges 107, 108 being clamped together on a hub sleeve or axle 112 by a nut 114 which secures also an anchor ring 117 of a brake carrier 115. The plates are secured together as in Fig. 1, by hollow bolts 122 which serve as brake-operating hydraulic cylinders housing pistons 123 which actuate pressure plates 124. The outer peripheral flanges 109, 110 seat the inner races 141, 141<SP>1</SP> of a roller bearing assembly the outer race 143 of which has a projecting radial flange 144 which is clamped between radial flanges 134, 135 of two run-sections 130, 131. The rim section 131 has the greater axial extent and houses the brake assembly which comprises interleaved stator and rotor discs 120, 121 respectively, axially slidably keyed to the non-rotatable brake carrier 115 and the underside of the rim section 131. A reaction plate 116 is held on to the end of the carrier 115 by through bolts 119 which serve also as the stator disc keys. The Specification also describes an alternative bearing assembly for the wheel rim comprising ball, instead of roller, bearing races. Specification 665,854 is referred to.
