Abstract

764,076. Selective punching machines. INTERNATIONAL TELEMETER CORPORATION. Aug. 29,1951, No. 20376/51. Class 31 (2). [Also in Groups XVIII, XIX, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XL (b) and XL (c)] A paper-tape punching machine having three punch members, two of which are set by electrical signals and one of which is set manually, is employed at the receiver in a television system (see Group XL (b)) to record information indicating the date, time and transmission received. The machine, Fig. 11, comprises a frame 230 supporting three drums 235, 236, 237 on a shaft 234. Each of the drums is provided with radially outwardly extending punch members 238 which are arranged in groups spaced uniformly about the circumference of the drums. Each of the groups comprises a unique combination of from one to six punches spaced axially as shown. Drum 237 carries sixty such groups which may indicate the date within a sixty-day period, and the drum is rotated from an initial position against the action of a restoring spring 298 by means of an electro. magnet operating a ratchet and pawl mechanism, Fig. 13 (not shown). The electromagnet receives a train of from one to sixty pulses of current under the control of signals sent from the television transmitting station and thereby brings a selected group of punches indicating the date above the paper tape 243 which is carried on a die member 239. Drum 236 carries twelve groups of punches and is positioned in a like manner against a restoring spring 292 by an electromagnet receiving from one to twelve pulses of current. The third drum 235 also carries twelve groups of punches and is positioned manually by rotation of the transmission selecting control 31 which is similar to a telephone dial. At a stage in the operation of the receiver, after the drums 235-237 have been positioned correctly, a pulse of current is passed to an electromagnet 248 which moves die member 239 upwards and causes the punch members to perforate the tape. After each operation of the die member, the tape may be moved to present a new unpunched area by a ratchet device rotating the tape take-up reel. The operation of the die member also closes a contact whereby an electromagnet is operated and withdraws detent pawls to allow drums 236 and 237 to return to their initial positions under the action of springs 297, 298. Drum 235 is also released by a linkage 259, 260 disengaging a detent 255 which holds the drum in the position to which it is rotated by dial 31. The television receiver incorporating the paper-tape punching machine also forms the subject of Specification 764,078, [Group XL (b)].
