Abstract
763,884. Preventing lateral clamping. McINTYRE, B.D., McINTYRE, W. D., and McINTYRE, C. S., [trading as PATENT DEVELOPMENT CO.]. Jan. 5, 1955, No. 350/55. Class 108(2). A vehicle suspension system comprises a pair of rod-like members disposed one at each side of the vehicle frame, the members including first portions which extend laterally and are disposed end to end and second portions which extend angularly from the outer ends of the first portions, means connecting the inner ends of the first portions to an axle housing and means connecting the free ends of the second portions to the opposite sides of the frame, the arrangement being such that the means connecting those portions of the rod-like members to the axle housing or to the frame will serve to provide pivotal connections such as will permit those portions to rock in a substantially vertical plane, while the means connecting the other portions of the rod-like members to the frame or to the axle housing will provide a rigid anchorage so that the anchored portions of the members will be placed in torsion on rocking motion of the pivotally connected portions. As shown, each of a pair of one piece rods 33, 35 includes a lever arm portion 37 and a torsion bar portion 39. The inner end of portion 37 is resiliently clamped to a bracket 43 on an axle housing 15 for rocking movement about an end portion 41 and the portion 39 is attached to a chassis frame member 13, by resilient bushes in brackets 53 and 59 and by an end clamping bracket 63. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the free end of the portion 39 is secured directly to the frame member 13 by bolts. In the arrangement according to Fig. 6 to 10 (not shown), the torsion bar portion of each rod is non- rotatably attached to the axle housing, the free end of the lever arm portion being pivotally attached to the chassis frame member.
