Abstract
763,814. Hand turning-gear. AKTIEBOLAGET ELEKTROLUX. Jan. 28, 1955 [Feb. 12, 1954], No. 2590/55. Class 7 (5). In a manually actuated engine starter comprising a pulley 31 adapted to be rotated in one direction for starting purposes by means of a cord 35 fastened thereto and rotatable in the opposite direction by a spring 23 for returning the starter into its operative position, and one or more pawls 47 operatively connected with the pulley 31 and adapted to be brought into and out of engagement with a ratchet wheel 12 connected with the engine crank-shaft, not shown, a pawl control member 51 retained by frictional contact with a stationary element of the starter and formed with means adjacent the ratchet wheel 12 to cause the pawls 47 to pivot inwardly into engagement with the wheel 12 on the initial rotation of the pulley in the starting direction and out of engagement therewith when the spring 23 rotates the pulley in the opposite direction, the pawls 47 during subsequent rotation of the pulley in each direction form means whereby the member 51 overcomes the frictional contact pressure and is carried along in the rotation of the pulley. The flywheel 10 has a hollow upstanding sleeve 11 secured thereto, the sleeve embodying the ratchet wheel 10 and having a pin 16 depending thereinto, which pin is fastened to a cover 13 connected to the engine housing, the pin rotatably supporting a hub 20 provided with an internal bush 19; the spring 23 which is wound around the hub has one end fixed thereto whilst the other end is clamped to the cover 13. The pulley 31 which is screwed to the hub 20 has one end of the cord 35 secured to it, the cord passing round the pulley and emerging from an aperture in the cover 13 ; a removable handle 37 is attached to the free end of the cord. The pulley is formed with a central opening of slightly greater diameter than the wheel 12 and at two diametrically opposite points is recessed to house one of the pawls 47, each of which co-operates with the wheel 12. The inverted cup-shaped member 51, having apertures through which the pawls project, is supported on the pin 16 and frictionally engaged by a dish-shaped spring 55 that is held in place by a washer 56 and 56 in the lower part of the pin. Upon pulling the handle 37 the pulley rotates anti-clockwise but initially the member 51 remains stationary, each pawl being clear of the wheel 12, until it is contacted by one of the sides of its associated aperture in the member 51 whereupon the pawls 47 are pivoted into engagement with the wheel 12 and the frictional effect of the spring 55 is overcome so that the pulley 31, sleeve 11 and flywheel are rotated together to start the engine. When the handle is released the spring 23 commences to rewind the cord; the member 51 remains stationary until the frictional effect of the spring 55 is overcome when the pawls contact the other sides of the apertures therein and pivot out of engagement with the wheel 12. The pulley and associated parts then rotate clockwise until the handle 37 bears against a rubber plug in the casing aperture through which the cord passes.
