Abstract
763,267. Tempered glass windscreens. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., JELLYMAN, P. E., and DICKINSON, G. A. Jan. 25,1955 [Feb. 11, 1954], No. 4109/54. Class 56 In the making of a tempered glass windscreen having a band of different temper separating the screen into two portions of which one will not fragment if the other does, the whole screen is heated to a temperature just above softening point, heat is partially extracted from the glass that is to form the band separating the two portions, and the whole screen, including the partially cooled band, is then rapidly chilled. During the partial initial cooling of the band, the other portions may continue to be heated. For this purpose a heated mask 7 may be applied to each face of the screen, the mask having an unheated annular portion 13<SP>1</SP> with air supply passages for the partial initial cooling of the band in the screen which will thus be defined by the annulus 13<SP>1</SP> and which will define a " window " within the screen. The band will be free of circumferential tensile stresses but will contain circumferential compressive stresses and will constitute a barrier against propagation of any fracture therethrough.
