Abstract
762,834. Generating combustion products under pressure. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 2, 1954 [Dec. 3, 1953], No. 34972/54. Class 51 (1). In a combustion chamber, for example a gas-turbine engine combustion chamber, an end cap assembly forming the closed end of a cylindrical flame tube 2 comprises a substantially conical stack of separate ring members each in the form of a cylindrical annular band 3, adjacent bands co-operating to define coolant fluid passages therebetween and being displaced axially relative to one another by a distance less than half the axial width of the band. The bands are secured together in the axially-spaced relation. In the end assembly of Fig. 1, the annular bands 3 are provided on their outer surfaces with longitudinal grooves 3a which form passages for flow of coolant air which issues in jets 3b. The fuel injector is surrounded by a dome 4 which together with a plate 8 and ring 5 forms a chamber 7 into which air is led through metering orifices 9, the air issuing through an annular nozzle formed between the dome 4 and the inturned edge 5a of the ring 5 so as to sweep towards the injector as shown at 6a. The stack of annular bands 3 is enclosed within a cap 11 and ring 12, air entering the space 10 through the orifices 15 in the cap 11. The air then issues through the passages 3a. The end assembly is supported from the flame tube 2 by means of U-shaped brackets 14. The bands 3 may be connected together by weld beads disposed in radial planes, each band being formed with an inclined slot in the region of the weld so as to form a resilient triangular prong. Alternatively, alternate pairs of bands may be connected by weld leads, one set of welds being disposed in a radial row spaced circumferentially from the other.
