A gate valve comprises an apertured plate 1 sliding between two sealing plates 6 which are pressed by resilient rings 7 against plate 1 and which shut off the inside of the housing from the flow passage when the valve is in an intermediate position. The plates 6 are of metal or plastic and are supported on seating members 4 which surround the flow passage and house resilient sealing rings 5. The aperture in plate 1 may be in the upper part of the plate, and the plates 6 may extend into the upper part of the valve housing.
