Abstract

Lactams containing seven or more ring atoms are polymerized with an alkali metal hydroxide in two stages by first bringing about the reaction between the alkali and the lactam at the boiling-point under considerably reduced pressure and then carrying out the polymerization at the polymerization temperature. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the pressure is such that the mixture boils within the range 120 DEG to 150 DEG C. Specified lactams are e -caprolactam, enantholactam, heptane acid lactam and c -octane acid lactam. In the example, e -caprolactam is polymerized in the presence of sodium hydroxide, the first stage taking place at 140 DEG C. and 12 mm. of mercury, followed by polymerization at 240 DEG C. in the presence of oxygen-free nitrogen.
