Abstract

Liquid, oily or wax-like polymeric products of low molecular weight containing carbon, fluorine and chlorine are prepared by subjecting a polymer of high molecular weight containing carbon, fluorine and chlorine to thermal decomposition under reduced pressure at a temperature within the range of 50 DEG to 350 DEG C. in the presence of anhydrous copper sulphate. The high molecular weight polymer may be polytrifluorochlorethylene or a copolymer of trifluorochlorethylene with trifluoropropene or vinylidene fluoride. The oily or wax-like products may be stabilized by fluorination with a metal fluoride such as cobalt trifluoride or a halogen fluoride such as chlorine trifluoride, and used as lubricants with corrosive substances, as special oils for transformers, fluids for heat transfer purposes or hydraulic fluids.
