Abstract
A wear-resistant composition comprises a gel having a base of drying or semi-drying oils, a chlorinated organic material which liberates chlorine when exposed to fire, an inert inorganic filler and a stabilizer preventing liberation of chlorine up to 200 DEG F., there being 40 to 60 per cent by weight of the chlorinated material relative to the weight of gel and chlorinated material. Oils specified are linseed, cottonseed, tall, soya-bean, china-wood, and fish, and also pitches and fatty acids derived therefrom by distillation. The oils may be modified by the addition of resinous materials. Chlorinated materials specified are chlorinated paraffin wax, chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated resin, and chlorinated vinyl compounds preferably with trieresyl phosphate. Stabilizers specified are lead phosphite, basic lead stearate or octoate, barium cadmium or strontium 2-ethyl hexoate, cadmium and strontium naphthenate, and barium or cadmium ricinoleate. Fillers are magnesium or aluminium silicate, or barium sulphate, or aklali metal carbonates. 15-40 per cent of antimony trioxide is also present.
