Class 39(3) [Also in Group XIII] A liquid heater comprises a tank 1 in which the liquid is heated, a pump 9 for said liquid being mounted in the tank and being driven by a shaft 14 extending through a tube 3 projecting upwardly from the tank, the space between the shaft and the tube wall being sealed by liquid in said tube. An immersion heater 31 within the tank 1 is controlled if desired by a thermoresponsive device 40 and is suspended, e.g. from the pump housing and may comprise uninsulated resistance wire supported by a ceramic tube. The wires 32 supplying power to the heater extend through generally a vertical conduit 33 which is open at its upper end to the atmosphere. As shown, oil for supplying heat to industrial equipment is heated in the tank 1 and is circulated by the pump 9 through a closed circuit (not shown) by way of flow and return conduits 10, 12. The tank 1 is surrounded by thermal insulation 23. An expansion tank 2 is mounted above the tank 1 and communicates with the latter through ports 7, 8 in the wall of the tube 3 which extends through and slightly above the upper wall 6 of the tank 2 thereby venting the tank 1 through the end of the tube. Vents (not shown) may also be provided in the wall 6. The tank 2 is surrounded by a jacket spaced therefrom through which air is drawn by a fan 15 to cool the tank 2. The fan 15 is mounted on the pump driving shaft 14 which is rotated by a motor 16. Oil enters the conduit 33 up to the level in the expansion tank 2 and provides a seal, additional venting being provided by a hole 36 in the conduit adjacent the upper end of the tank 1. A portion 35 of the conduit 33 is disposed in the stream of air induced by the fan 15 and is thereby cooled.
