Abstract
A silica/alumina catalyst is produced by forming an alkaline silica hydrosol, preferably formed at pH between 9.5 and 10.5; allowing the hydrosol to gel, preferably in aqueous slurry; co-mingling with resultant alkaline hydrogel sufficient aluminium sulphate solution, preferably of pH 1, to provide the desired alumina concentration in the final product; adding sufficient ammonia to effect precipitation of alumina; if desired ageing the mixture which usually has a pH of about 7.5 for about 15 minutes when the pH is about 7.0; finally washing and drying the product. The hydrosol may be formed from sodium silicate and a mineral acid, preferably sulphuric acid. The composition of the catalyst is preferably 87/13 silica/ alumina. Drying before the final washing and drying is a preferred feature. Comparison of the catalytic properties is made with the similar product produced according to Specification 753,695.
