Abstract

Trihalosilanes of the formula SiHX3, where X is halogen, are disproportionated, mainly to dihalo and tetrahalo silanes, by heating in the presence of a tertiary amine of the formula NR1,R2R3 where R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different alkyl radicals. The reaction is preferably effected by refluxing at atmospheric pressure when it is preferred that the alkyl groups in the amine have more than 2 carbon atoms. The amine catalyst may constitute about 2 to 30 per cent by weight of the trihalosilane. In the examples: (1) trichlorosilane is refluxed with tri-n-butyl-amine giving, after rectification, dichlorosilane with small amounts of monosilane and monochlorosilane; (2) as in (1) but n-propyl-di-n-butyl-amine is used.
